Intellectual property for First Nations businesses

Learn how to protect your ideas, engage respectfully when cultural knowledge or material is involved, and explore how First Nations voices are helping shape the future of the IP system.

Terminology

We use the term 'cultural knowledge and material' to describe First Nations cultures, knowledge, material and creative expressions.

You may also see terms such as Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), Indigenous Knowledge (IK), Traditional Knowledge (TK) and Traditional Cultural Expressions (TCE) used by governments, communities, organisations and international bodies.

We use the term First Nations people for consistency throughout these pages. We recognise that many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations may prefer different terms.
